Anchor Song: This Is Amazing Grace
Artist: Phil Wickham
She came to me asking if I would be able to do her a favor. After hearing what it was, I said, “Yes” then added, “by God’s grace”. It was more like the second part of my response triggered something because a sad look immediately followed my response, so I asked what the problem was, and she said to me, “don’t you know that when people add –by God’s grace- to a response, they are trying to tell you that thing would most probably not happen”. as soon as she said that, I immediately told her that not in this case, because this one MUST happen.
I couldn’t help but feel somehow after that exchange, I kept asking myself, how did we get to the point where “by God’s grace” has become an optimistic way of presenting an impossibility. I’m not going to pretend like I didn’t understand what she was saying, or like I’ve not heard it before. I sure if she had asked that lady if God can do anything and everything, she would say an emphatic “YES”, but unconsciously now, probably due to the way she has used some phrases over time, she – like many others, have translated “by God’s grace” to be nice way of saying “I can’t do that except it happens by chance”.
I’m sharing this with you because I want you to be more careful with what you say, maybe you even agree with her view on that phrase who knows? But let me tell you something, Paul said in 1 Corinthians 15:10 - But whatever I am now it is all because God poured out such kindness and grace upon me-and not without results: for I have worked harder than all the other apostles, yet actually I wasn't doing it, but God working in me, to bless me[TLB], i.e “the grace of God” was the reason he could do much more than anyone else. Therefore, I think it’s time to make that mental switch, such that “by God’s grace” no longer means I might not be able to do this thing, but means, though it might be tasking, yet I WILL do it because of this GRACE of God. God Bless You!
