The fashion industry is a very large sector of the present day economy, so it is not a surprise that most entrepreneurs are veering in that direction.
Our entrepreneur today, popularly known as the Fashpreneur, is Ms Kevin Annie Edoho. She is the Creative Director/CEO of Kannie Edoho Concepts.
Ms Edoho is a bubbly young lady who has a rare show of comradeship that we need amongst entrepreneurs around the world.
Ms Edoho is a bubbly young lady who has a rare show of comradeship that we need amongst entrepreneurs around the world.
While I listened to her, her optimistic nature told me more about her love for her budding enterprise than her words did.
Please tell us a little about yourself?
I am a graduate of Plant Biology and Biotechnology from the University of Benin, Edo State. I am a native of Akwa Ibom, Eket precisely and the first of four kids. I am the Creative Director of Kannie Edoho Concepts, we make bags, clutch purses and ready-to-wear female outfits.
Why did you decide to venture into the fashion industry?
My interest developed as a result of the creative flair I have for making stuff out of waste products during my undergraduate days. I thought that the best way I could channel this creativity was towards learning how to make dresses and gowns, the nitty-gritty of the fashion industry and sewing world. During NYSC days, I took time out to learn how to make bags and clutch purses so that I could also incorporate them into my fashion brand.
What exactly is the brand Kannie Edoho?
Kannie Edoho is a contemporary african brand making ready to wear female clothes and hand made bags using a blend of western and indigenious fabrics to incorporate our designs.
Alright! So what challenges have you faced so far?
So far, it has been interesting, quite challenging but mostly a learning process.
The major challenge I have faced have been trying to balance my work, my entrepreneurial life with my personal life, that has been an upheaval task. The other challenge has been meeting up the demands for supply of our designs; sometimes the demands are just pouring in and even though all hands are on deck, it could be challenging and tasking.
How have you been able to overcome these challenges?
I took out time to talk to predecessors, those who have been in the business longer than I have, and they advised me to implement some structures and incorporate new business strategies to combat these challenges. I am currently working on doing that and hope to incorporate as time goes on
Balancing my personal life with my entrepreneurial life has been by practicing opportunity cost, foregoing the less important tasks for the important ones as they come.
I think it is a smart move to learn from others' experiences like that. So what is going on with Kannie Edoho now?
Currently, we are working on new collections to showcase to our clients. We are also working on increasing our online presence by creating online sales outlets for our designs so our clients on all social media can easily purchase.
Any plans for the nearest future?
In the next three to four years, I see Kannie Edoho successfully combating the challenges we have so that they are greatly reduced, to be able to serve a greater market across the country and also set up a big show room for our ready -to- wear brands.
Advice to Upcoming Fashion Entrepreneurs?
My advise to upcoming fashion entrepreneurs would be PASSION. Be passionate about what you know how to do best. When I am faced with a thousand reasons to quit, my passion hollas, "oya just give it another trial".
One must be determined to see a positive growth difference as you grow as an entrepreneur. The love for what one does makes the hassles of the fashion industry look easier, although I must confess the fashion business is not an easy job.
Secondly, I would say BE CONSISTENT, that is what keeps you in the market. Fashion entrepreneurship entails two aspects, you have to know the fashion and also the business aspect. You have many angles as a designer, ranging from men's wear to female wears etc. Do good to carve a niche for yourself, this is what sets you aside from other fashion designers. It is your signature touch, which clients can always identify without being told, also makes a huge difference.
