One of my intentions for this blog is to promote small and medium scale businesses. I appreciate how some folks are dedicated to turning their passion to money-making ventures. There are loads of entrepreneurs who just need more publicity and promotion for their crafts. Another striking quality about these entrepreneurs is that their drive is primarily love for what they do.
Today, I present to you, my first entrepreneur Ms. Eruke. When I discussed what I needed from her, she listened carefully and asked very intelligent questions.
Here is what Ms Eruke had to say about how her amazing venture of making purses.
Please introduce yourself?
My name is Ojuederie Eruke. I am a graduate of Linguistics and Communications Studies from the University of PortHarcourt, Rivers State. I am presently studying to get my Master’s Degree in Linguistics at the University of Benin, Edo State. My craft is making 100percent hand-made purses using all kinds of fabrics.
Why did you decide on purses as a venture, seeing it is a deviation from your course of study?
I got interested in this art because of my love for purse. My dressing was never complete without a nice clutch purse to match my outfit and so when I got the opportunity to learn the art, I grabbed it with both hands.
What are the challenges you have faced thus far?
In every business there are challenges especially at the initial stages. Some of my challenges were the fact that I had to determine the best materials to use for the purses that will give me exactly what my mind conceptualizes. Also, I was faced with the challenge of meeting the individual needs of customers. Of course dealing with people with different mindsets has always been a huge problem in businesses.
How do you handle these challenges?
I learned to put myself in the shoes of my customers, doing that usually helps me to bring out the best in me, that is, anything I make must be something I can use myself.
What has kept you going, in spite of the challenges?
I love what I do because it totally reflects my personality and I enjoy seeing things made with my own hands.
Advice to prospective entrepreneurs?
Be true to your dreams and nurture them until they are realized. It is not so easy neither is it too hard. Nothing you do with your hands is ever a waste.
