Yes, it true that you should learn to let go of the past, but there are some elements in your past you must never let go of. I know you must have heard it from several people, myself included, that your focus must be forward, that you must concentrate on what is ahead of you, and that is true, but then you must also know that some events in your past we designed as rehearsals for the future you seek.
I remember a song I learnt at the Corper’s fellowship during my service year, I feel in love with it just because of the first line, which says “Your goodness yesterday, gives me strength for today...”, and because of those words, that song remains a delight. You see, one of the things I have learnt is that God creates a history with an individual before that person encounters an impossible situation, so that when they do, they have something in their past as a record of God’s ability to do the impossible.
When David confronted Goliath, everyone thought he had lost his mind, but he knew he had an history with God, the points at which he handled the bear and the lion, and so he refreshed that history. You will also find that Abraham and those after him would set up alters where they had encounters with God, and would always return often return to those points later to worship God.
Therefore, while you make efforts to clear your history, make sure you save those moments where you know God had been good to you, and when the going gets though, find time to return there. Psalms 103:2 says - Yes, I will bless the Lord and not forget the glorious things he does for me[TLB]. You see, the strength and confidence you require for what lies ahead might just be stored up in your history. So, make efforts to remember times when God has been good to you, it will help you navigate your path to the good times that lies ahead. God Bless You!
