08:32

Hey sugar bunnies!
It never ceases to amaze me how far people can go if driven by their passion, their love for a certain enterprise just keeps gearing them towards achieving amazing feats.

Today, we present the entrepreneurship story of Ms Yvonne Osayuwamen, whose passion for eating great cakes pushed her to bake from the pages of her Home Economics Textbooks.

Be inspired!!

Ms Yvonne
Please, tell us about yourself and your business?
My name is Osayuwamen Yvonne, CEO Vonne Cakes and Events Planning. I am a graduate of Botany from the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. Vonne Cakes and Events Planning, we bake cakes for all occasions and plan events too.

How did you venture into baking?
Well, baking was something I've always had passion for back in secondary school. Because I loved eating cake, I would always bake from my Home Economics Text books. Then while waiting for admission for my tertiary education, my mom begged me to learn professionally from a white lady, who at the time always baked my birthday cakes. I bluntly refused.

A while later, my mom told me the cake for my birthday that year was gonna be the last she'd pay for and that if I wanted a cake I had to bake one for myself. I actually thought it was a joke. Apparently, my mom was serious so after my birthday that year, I went to learn from the same woman. I learnt because I love cakes and wanted to keep eating good cakes, I didn't even have plans to make money out of it.

Unknown to me, people took note and liked what I was doing, so after a year of tutelage, I landed my first paid job and it was to bake a wedding cake
I finally got into school and really didn't want to tell anyone. My room mate found out, spread the news and I started getting orders for my cakes.

Challenges:
The major challenge I had was competition. There were two other people who baked in the hostel I stayed in, it was like a fresher was coming to take away their business. But I just encouraged myself and kept the faith.
Today, I am still trying to get to the top by giving my best.

Advice:
My advice is just that you should hold on to your faith and keep your spirits high because it is not easy. It will be rough at the beginning but trust me, it is worth it at the end.
