What is the difference between learning from the past and living in the past? It occurred to me that if this difference is not known, some people might think they are going through the process of learning from their past, not knowing they are actually living in it.
Most times, we think living in the past only concerns bad experiences, we assume it only relates to the negative, but what if I tell you that it's also possible to live in your past glory? Hebrews 11:15 says - If they had been thinking about the country that they had left, they could have found a way to go back[GW]. Truth is, memories are one of those things that make life beautiful, most especially the good ones. However, the reason God gave us a "memory card" that doesn't get full is so that you and I can constantly build fresh memories. Therefore, if the memory that has the strongest effect on your right now is something that has happened in the past, be careful, you might just be living in the past. However, if every experience you have helps you look forward to a better experience, then you are learning from each experience.
Jesus endured the cross for the joy that was set before Him, meaning He was looking forward, not backwards to something. If the path of the just is supposed to shine brighter and brighter, doesn't that suggest that we constantly building better experiences?
Hence, I believe we are designed by God to always be looking forward to something that excites us more than anything that we have ever experienced, a continuous cycle where hopes become experiences which then turns into memories. So, what are you looking forward to, that the thought of that experience outshines anything you've ever felt? A wise man said - if your tomorrow is not better than your today, it's because you were living in your yesterday. God Bless You!
