It never ceases to amaze me how entrepreneurs create businesses for the most unexpected reasons. How they go from just thinking those thoughts on creating a brand and then going on to make them
come to pass, it is not an easy task yet they keep at it. Success has to be built daily and a standard has to be set to leave a mark in a competitive market. Here is Ms Tolulope of Cakes de'Porche whose will to be different brought about creating beautiful cakes and confectioneries..
Be inspired!
My Business and I?
My name is Kuyoro Tolulope, founder and CEO, Cakes de’porche, located in the city of Ibadan. Oyo state. We produce high quality and delicious cakes, confections and desserts. Cakes de’porche is a business currently gaining ground in the city of Ibadan.
The Birth of Cakes De' Porche?
It started about 2 years and is growing fast. Cakes de’porche is a result of the will of a young girl, in the university to try to be different; I wanted to be known for something different as a student. I started researching then I came across a book “Gifts from a Jar”, I started reading the book and gradually the interest grew, I started to make progress by trials and errors engaging my friends and neighbors as tasters or connoisseurs…… then I went for training during one of the breaks from school. After training, I started telling my friends to tell their friends in school that I make cakes, I took a free cake to my friend’s birthday party just to show off myself, surprisingly I got calls and texts saying it was really nice, tastes different and all. The week after, I got my first paid order for a cake. This was in October, 2013 and there and then a business was born. So far, we have been growing steadily, we are trying to make a name for ourselves, this year, we got over 100 customers added to our customer base data both in Ibadan and in Lagos, we count that as an achievement for us this year.
Challenges?
The major struggle we had starting up was trying to convince customers to choose us instead of the existing ones, we had to do a lot of persuasion and sometimes reduce price for our customers to choose us. Thank God that stage is almost passed. We are still growing but we have definitely left where we were last year.
Work and Personal Life?
Balancing work with my personal life hasn’t been really easy, first with my studies as a student back in school, now with family holidays, I try to balance up sometime by taking breaks and scheduling my days efficiently. Another challenge faced was the issue of customers under-pricing our products, we are still working on that by trying to sensitize them that our products are high quality hence our price and the people who choose us are never disappointed, I guess that’s why we still in business.
Motivation?
The expression of happiness on our customer’s face at delivery is what we live for. The satisfactory feedback we get are what motivates us to go on doing what we do despite challenges faced; sometimes, the expression is all we gain from the production of that cake but we are not fazed, we move on.
Advice to aspiring entrepreneurs?
To upcoming entrepreneurs, my advice is to always follow what gives you genuine happiness. If your business is money oriented, it may not go long term and consistency is key to business growth.
Good luck!
